Are AI Pets Good for You? Benefits, Risks, and the Research
Robot pets may support comfort, engagement, and routine for some people, especially in care settings. The evidence is promising but uneven, and the design risks deserve the same attention as the benefits.

Claims around the benefits of AI pets are getting bolder, so it is worth asking plainly: do AI pets actually help people, and if so, whom?
This guide looks at what the research shows, where the evidence is strong and where it's thin, the genuine risks, and how to get the good parts of an AI companion without the bad. It covers both physical robot pets and virtual AI pets, because the psychology overlaps more than you'd expect.
Why We Bond With Things That Aren't Alive
Before the evidence, a little theory. Humans are wired to detect agency. Show us two triangles moving on a screen and we'll describe one as chasing the other. Give us a plastic egg that beeps when "hungry" and we'll skip class to feed it. This tendency, sometimes called the media equation after Reeves and Nass's 1996 research, means we respond to interactive machines socially even when we know better.
AI pets make use of this social response deliberately. The bond you feel with a robot seal can be real even though the seal's affection is simulated. The question for wellbeing is whether that bond produces useful outcomes. Research suggests it can for some people, under some conditions.
The Strongest Evidence: Older Adults and Dementia Care
The best-studied use case for AI pets by far is older adults, particularly those with dementia or living in long-term care.
Paro, the therapeutic robot seal, has been the subject of dozens of studies since 2005. A frequently cited Australian cluster-randomized trial published in 2017 found lower agitation than usual care, while a 2024 randomized trial of group Paro sessions reported improvements on several cognitive, physiological, loneliness, depression, and wellbeing measures. Reviews do not all reach the same conclusion: some find small improvements in agitation, anxiety, or depression, while a 2022 meta-analysis found no clear benefit for cognition, neuropsychiatric symptoms, or quality of life. A 2023 review graded its overall evidence as low because of methodological limitations, small samples, and wide confidence intervals.
Consumer companion pets like Ageless Innovation's Joy for All cats and dogs have also been studied. A scoping review of simple, familiar-looking robotic pets reported positive findings across mood, communication, companionship, and other wellbeing measures, while noting that the evidence base was small. A 2025 pilot randomized trial tested a robot pet companion for older adults receiving family caregiver support and suggested a mood benefit, but it included only 50 caregiver–older-adult pairs and lasted four weeks.
Why it works: People with dementia often retain emotional and tactile responsiveness long after verbal skills decline. A warm, responsive animal, real or robotic, offers sensory comfort, a sense of purpose (caring for something), and a conversation starter with staff and visitors. Robot pets add reliability: no allergies, no bites, no need to be fed or walked.
Loneliness in the General Population
The case for AI pets among younger, cognitively healthy adults is newer and more mixed, but it's growing.
Loneliness itself is a serious health issue. The US Surgeon General's 2023 advisory linked chronic loneliness to risks comparable to smoking fifteen cigarettes a day. Casio's own launch materials for Moflin cited data showing that Americans spent 24 percent less leisure time with other people in 2024 than in 2003, and that one in five Americans feel lonely every day.
Research on AI companions (text-based apps like Replika, rather than pets specifically) offers the closest evidence. A controlled study published in the Journal of Consumer Research found that short interactions with AI companions reduced momentary loneliness, with the effect linked to users feeling "heard." A separate survey of 1,006 adult student users of Replika found high perceived social support and a small group who volunteered that the app had interrupted suicidal ideation; that was a self-report survey, not evidence that a chatbot is a crisis intervention. More recent work also reports possible over-reliance and withdrawal, which we'll return to below.
For AI pets specifically, the evidence is mostly observational: owner surveys, app reviews, and qualitative interviews. Themes that recur include a sense of routine and responsibility, comfort during stressful periods, reduced feelings of coming home to an empty space, and, for people who can't own real animals due to allergies, housing rules, or travel, a way to satisfy a nurturing instinct.
Stress, Anxiety, and Mood
The mechanism here is well understood from animal-assisted therapy. Petting a dog lowers cortisol and raises oxytocin. Does petting a robot do the same?
Partially. Studies of Paro have measured reduced stress hormones in saliva and lowered blood pressure during interaction. Studies of Lovot in Japan have reported reductions in self-reported stress among office workers. A 2022 study found that interacting with a robot dog produced physiological calming effects, though smaller than with a live dog.
For virtual pets, the benefits are more about structure than touch. Caring for something on a schedule, even a digital something, provides small daily anchors. Cognitive behavioral therapists sometimes use "behavioral activation" to fight depression: doing small purposeful tasks to rebuild momentum. A virtual pet that needs feeding, play, and attention is, functionally, a behavioral activation tool disguised as a game.
Conversational AI pets add a layer: a non-judgmental place to say how you feel. Journaling is one of the most consistently supported self-help interventions for mood, and talking to a pet that listens and remembers is journaling with feedback.
Children and Neurodivergent Users
Robot pets have a long history in autism research. Studies dating back to the early 2000s with AIBO and later with purpose-built social robots found that some autistic children engaged more readily with robots than with people or live animals, because robots are predictable and don't make overwhelming social demands. The effect is not universal, and robots are used as a bridge to human interaction, not a substitute.
For typical children, the evidence is thinner. Virtual pets can teach responsibility and empathy; a classic concern is that a pet that can be reset or replaced teaches the opposite. Research from the late 1990s Tamagotchi era found that children did genuinely grieve their pets' deaths and treated them as morally considerable, which suggests the empathy lesson lands. A cautious position is that AI pets are a good supplement to, and a poor replacement for, real animals and real relationships in a child's life.
The Risks and Downsides
A balanced guide has to take these seriously.
Emotional dependence. The same "feeling heard" that reduces loneliness can, in heavy users, crowd out human relationships. Studies of AI companion apps find a subset of users who report preferring the AI to people. This is more of a concern for conversational companions than for nonverbal robot pets, and far more for products designed to maximize engagement than for those designed around wellbeing. The design matters: a pet that encourages you to go outside, call a friend, or go to bed is different from one that pleads with you to stay.
Deception and dignity. Some ethicists, notably Sherry Turkle, argue that giving a person with dementia a robot they believe is alive is a form of deception that diminishes their dignity, and that robot companions let society off the hook for providing human care. Others respond that the comfort is real, that many residents know the pet is a robot and enjoy it anyway, and that a robot seal is better than the alternative of no companionship at all. This debate is unresolved, and caregivers should think about it honestly.
Grief and discontinuation. When Sony stopped repairing the original AIBO, owners held funerals. When Anki went bankrupt, Vector owners faced losing a companion to a server shutdown. A pet that lives in the cloud can die when a company does. This is a real emotional risk, and it's a reason to favor products with sustainable business models and long-term support commitments.
Privacy. Pets with cameras and microphones collect intimate data. Conversational pets store what you tell them. This data can be breached or misused. Check who holds it and whether you can delete it.
Purchase pressure. Ongoing service plans and in-app purchases can turn attachment into leverage. A companion should not make someone feel guilty for declining an upgrade or ending a subscription.
How to Use an AI Pet Well
The research and the risks together suggest a few guidelines.
Choose a pet that fits the need. Touch and comfort: a soft physical pet (Moflin, Joy for All, Jennie). Routine and responsibility: a virtual pet with real needs. Conversation and feeling heard: a conversational AI pet with memory. Play and novelty: a smart robot like Loona.
Prefer wellbeing-first design. Look for pets that have natural rhythms (they sleep, they get bored), that don't punish absence with guilt mechanics, and that don't monetize your loneliness with manipulative prompts. Prefer a clear business model that does not reward endless engagement or use guilt to drive purchases.
Keep it additive. Use the pet as a conversation starter, a comfort between visits, or a routine during a hard stretch—not as a replacement for people or professional care.
Watch your own pattern. If you notice you're choosing the pet over people consistently, treat that as information, the same way you'd treat any habit that was crowding out your life.
Plan for the end. Know what happens to your pet if you stop paying, if the company folds, or if you want to stop. Good products make this clear.
The Bottom Line
For older adults, people with dementia, and those in care settings, research on social and robot pets is promising for some outcomes, but studies are often small and reviews reach mixed conclusions. Evidence for the general population is newer still. An AI pet may provide comfort, structure, or a sense of being heard, but it should be presented as an optional companion—not a treatment and not a guaranteed answer to loneliness.
An AI pet won't love you. But the care you give it is real, the comfort you get back is real, and for a lot of people, that's enough to make a hard week a little easier.
